Promenade 2014 Proves To Be A “Roarin’ Good Time”

The 2014 Promenade was a “roaring good time” as students filled the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium dressed in this year’s theme of The Great Gatsby. The theme was a hit for the bulldogs and was “one of the best yet,” according to Mr. Jolley, head of this year’s prom. The décor for Promenade fit the 20s style perfectly and was certainly admired by the students as they let out “oohs”
and “ahhs” of approval. The décor included long beaded curtains that flowed from the ceiling, white table cloths with vases filled with sparkling white jewels and flowers, fountains filled with a variety
of beverages, and a wide range of snack foods to choose from. This year’s prom crew made sure to make the theme of The Great Gatsby as realistic as possible, even adding the single green light like the one that appears in the novel and movie. At the front of the room, acrobats performed for students in metal rings that hung from the ceiling of the auditorium. In addition, there were photo booths located in another room for students to take pictures in. To add to the Great Gatsby theme, students took turns taking pictures with a 1920s car that was donated for the night by Mr. Pack. Students also gathered around for pictures with “true flapper girls” to make the night as genuine as possible. For entertainment, students filled the center stage for a fun night of dancing with friends and dates. The music included a variety of song choices selected by the DJ and by the students who had tweeted song requests to the BSHS Prom twitter account. To top off an exciting night, Mr. Jolley took the stage to announce Prom Court. When buying prom tickets in advance, students nominated fellow classmates and the list was later narrowed down to four choices each for both Prom King and Queen, and Prom Prince and Princess. Upon entering the auditorium, students were asked to vote among their selections. With a drum roll, students waited in anticipation as Mr. Jolley announced Tysean
Edmundson as this year’s Prom King; Mackenzie Carey as Prom Queen; Baxter Murray as Prom Prince; and Josie Pettit as Prom Princess. The 2014 Promenade was a night to remember for BSHS students and truly captured the theme of the 1920’s. It will definitely be difficult to top next year. A huge thank you is given to all those who brought together this year’s prom and gave each student that attended a night full of memories.

Seniors Dominate 2014 Powder Puff Game

The Seniors crowd around the spirit stick after
their big victory against the Juniors.

The senior class had a huge victory on Thursday, February 20, as they dominated in the Powder Puff game. The seniors first played against the sophomores at 6:00 p.m. and were pumped up to show the underclassmen how much they were “in it to win it.” The coin toss was held at the fifty-yard line for the seniors to call, which they won so they chose to keep the ball. The seniors’ offense racked up points on the scoreboard and their defense never let the sophomores gain a single touchdown. The final score for the seniors vs. sophomores’ game was 26-0, leading the seniors into the championship game. The second game was held at 7:00 p.m. for the juniors vs. freshmen. Juniors played a tough game and never let the freshmen get past them for a score. The final score was 22-0, and it was time for the seniors and the juniors to line up on the field for the championship game. Both teams faced each other at the fifty-yard line for the seniors to call the coin toss, which they won choosing to receive the ball first. Both teams were playing tough, but the junior’s offense proved to be just as determined to win as the seniors, as they scored the first touchdown in the game. Even though the juniors scored first, the seniors were eager to play hard and win the game no matter what the juniors threw at them. The game was intense as the clock ran down and the seniors were pushing to get a touchdown before the clocked ticked zero. Finally, within the last five minutes of the game, the seniors’ offense pushed themselves to make their first touchdown, setting the score at 6-6. The clock soon hit zero without either team ahead in score, causing the game to lead into overtime. The teams circled around the fifty-yard line to hear the rules of the overtime game and for the coin toss. Seniors called the toss, but juniors won and decided to hand the ball over to the seniors first. The teams lined the field to start the overtime. The juniors’ defense was succeeding at pushing the seniors back, but the seniors toughed it out at the last down and scored a touchdown, making the score 12-6. The ball was handed to the juniors for their turn to set a tie once again. The intensity rose throughout the stadium to see if the juniors could push it through and go into a double overtime. However, with one down left to go, the seniors intercepted the ball as it was being passed. Cheers roared in the stadium as the seniors won the 2014 Powder Puff game. The senior players crowded to the front of the stadium to receive the spirit stick and celebrate their victory. Congratulations seniors!

The assembly included many traditional dances from different countries around the world. To begin the assembly, students of BSHS watched the Parade of Flags, which included 36 flags of countries that the school represents. Austin Loo (Multi-Cultural Club president) stated, “I believe this year’s assembly was a success and everyone did an amazing job.” The assembly started with a traditional Hmong dance performed by Merecedes Lee, Yumi Lee, Sabrina Moua, and Cheeia Vang. BSHS students saw a variety of other dances including The Punjabi and The Calypso. The members of the Key Club performed a shag dance and students from Sra. Morrow’s Spanish 3 class performed the Salsa dance. Contralto Madian Estela sang “Me Haces Crecer” to show her love for her culture. The assembly ended with the Limbo performed by students from Sra. Coach ‘O’ on & off

Coach Steve Olejnik says, "Getting the job at Boiling Springs was very exciting for me because I
loved the staff and it was a great opportunity to teach such great students. Another plus is it is very close to home!" Well loved by the student body and faculty, Olejnik graduated from Wofford College with an undergraduate degree in Chemistry before receiving his Master’s degree in Curriculum at Furman. Mr. Gordon offered him a job at BSHS in 2007, and he was eager to get involved both in and outside the classroom. He started volunteering with basketball, taking statistics and filming for the team his first year at BSHS. As the season went on, he became a varsity assistant for a year, then coached the C-Team at the 9th grade campus. After coaching freshmen, he became varsity assistant with Coach Browning for three years. In the summer of 2013, he was offered the varsity girls basketball coaching position. Olejnik commented, "Coaching girls is different, but I enjoy working with anyone who works hard and that is something that the girls do best." At home, Olejnik is newly married and has a baby girl on the way, who will arrive in June. He enjoys playing golf, spending time with his wife, and going out to different restaurants to try tasty new cuisine.
"I wouldn’t trade this job for anything. I enjoy being around people and students who work hard and I get to see students and the Girls Basketball team work hard each and every day!"

Manning and Wilson Face Off

Once a year, two NFL teams go head–to–head to compete for the title of being the best in the league. This year on February 2nd, the legendary Denver Broncos will face the fierce Seattle Seahawks in New York at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.Peyton Manning, the Broncos’ two year quarterback, has one Superbowl win and has been in the NFL for 16 years. He led the Broncos this season to end with a 13–3 record. On Sunday, January 19th, the Broncos punished Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, taking home a 23–10 win and a chance to win Superbowl XLVIII.
Russell Wilson, the Seahawks’ two year rookie quarterback, has no Superbowl wins under his belt and has been in the NFL for a mere two years. He took this season by storm and the Seahawks finished with a 13–3 record. On Sunday, January 19th, the Seahawks unleashed the beast on Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers, who were favored to win, capturing a 23–17 win. The Seahawks have only had one chance at a Superbowl win in 2006 and lost. Because of Kaepernick’s six interceptions and three turnovers, the Seahawks now have a chance to redeem themselves. Wilson says, "Why not us?"Who shall prevail? Will it be 37-year-old legend Peyton Manning, an eternal king to football? Or will it be the 25-year-old rookie Russell Wilson, an icon in the making? Tune in this weekend to find out!
